It would be awesome to actually be able to sneak up close enough and put an arrow through the enemy. Silent and deadly.....

One guy I met at the archery shop tried to tell me I needed a full draw clicker and string silencers. I told him that if you knew what you were doing, you
wouldn't need that garbage on a bow. (Just my opinion. I'm sure it helps some people, but I don't care for those.) He kept bragging about his
"Wes Wallace" bow. But yet he couldn't hit a paper plate at 30 yards with it. Just goes to show you that no matter what you have, you'd
better be proficient at it.

Bows can be kind of like rifles to some people, they want to hang every imaginable thing off it...where simple and basic is usually best.
Bow-hunting an enemy...that would be tough! But, when the enemy is sneaking up on you at night...that seems like the best time to get in a shot, without alerting said enemie's friends, or giving one's position away with a muzzle flash. ??

I know that during the Viet Nam Conflict (War) NavSpecWar types were issued bows for silent killing. Compounds, longbows and crossbows were used.
I've often wondered if, instead of a silenced firearm like an MP5SD for use in hide-site security in order to maintain the element's unnoticed presence, an American CIDG might want a powerful crossbow for that purpose? Silencers are expensive and challenging, administratively speaking, to obtain. What's more in a nighttime chance contact situation where a surveillance team has been discovered by accident a crossbow operator might put four or five bolts on target before the opposition even figures out what's happening to them... Screaming men and no weapon's retort or explosive concussion makes for a confused (and enraged and therefore less effective) enemy... Irish |

But anyway... A crossbow would be a formidable weapon. Especially if you need to remain hidden. You wouldn't alert the enemy to your presence right away. You could probably set one up as a booby trap.

Be easy enough. Set the crossbow in the crook of a series of branch/twig Y's pegged into the ground arranged along the forestock and belly aspect of the
buttstock and orientated towards the impact area (Xkz); so upward and laterally to account for the height of the target and movement of the target while the
triggerline plays out its slack. Once the Y's are in place and you are satisfied with the arrangement of the weapon, place the weapon on full draw and
set it onto the Y's (Xa). Tie a loose slip knot around the trigger, run your line backward to a peg of some sort (Xb), then route the line across the
route of march you are hoping to snag someone in and secure it to a peg on the far side (Xc) tight but not taunt (You don't want to AD a bolt).

sweeeet..... That would make a great trap. As far as Klick's comment goes, stalking the enemy with a bow would be the ultimate hunt! (Provided YOU were
successful, not him...lol)

Bows have been used in modern wars to take out guards in very well planned operations. But, I think those have been rare occurences and usually a silent
firearm is used for that.
I would love to have a good cross bow. I think it would be very valuable for home-base nightime defense after a major "social event", or after the thin blue line breaks. Longbows, recurves and compound bows all will have a faster rate of fire than a crossbow. The crossbow can be fired from a prone postition, and no movement is required before releasing the bolt. So....?

The only draw back, (no pun intended), is the cocking of the crossbow. Unless you have an electronic device for cocking. But I don't know if that would
negate noise discipline.
