If you feel you can afford it look for a Finn (marked SA on the receiver) M1939. These run typically between $175 and $750 (for a pristine, never been issued late 1970's Finnish Army target model). The receivers and bolts are all Russian, some dating from 1891 and as recent as 1937. The bolts have improved springs and firing pin. The receivers are all hex models as the Finns acquired so many from numerous sources they could easily afford to disdain the round receivers. Some of these receivers were made in the US for sale to the Czarist Army in 1891 and during WW1 and were later captured from the Russians. The barrels were mostly made by Tikka or Sako, with some being made in Belgium and thus called "B" barrels. They are thicker and heavier than the M1891 Russians, and about 3 cm shorter. The magazines are beefier and have improved "anti-jam" characteristics. The triggers are crisper and lighter, almost like Garand NM. The rear sights are similar to the Russian but stouter and more finely crafted. Flipping the rear sight up 90 degrees reveals further range settings to 2000 meters! The front sights use laterally curved blades as opposed to the Russian ring and give the Finn rifle the affectionate name of the soldiers, "Pystakorva", which roughly translates as "Spitz dog ears". The stock is massive and well crafted, imparting a feel similar to a Garand. The receiver/barrel fit to the stocks is clearly superior to the Russian. These rifles have a well deserved reputation for accuracy. I have seen claims that they are as accurate as the Swiss and Swedish bolt rifles. I have no way of verifying that but if so the Finns are definitely price competitive and likely much stouter platforms. The receivers will readily accept a Russian PU scope mount and with such would make formidable DMR's. Even the less expensive rifles (due to condition) are well worth the effort to restore the metal and wood. Even dark bore rifles I have seen shoot very well. Unused stocks and barrels are available.

One interesting aspect of this site is the section listing "Antique M-39 rifles". These rifles can be purchased over the net or with a phone call, requiring only a faxed or e-mailed photo ID to verify legal age, and the rifles will be shipped to your doorstep without any Federal paperwork. No FFL01 or C&R needed! That is because the Russian receivers were made before 1898. These rifles are no different from any of the M-39's made with Czarist or Soviet hex receivers manufactured after 1898.

Note that these are not carbines, but rather, full sized and heavy MBR's.

I own two, one made from a 1906 Czarist Izhevsk receiver and the other from a 1929 Soviet Tula. Both are Sako conversions. They will never be for sale. These are rifles for the ages, destined to carried by my grandchildren.
